Ardossan Academy’s ‘Let Me Tell You a Story’ project was funded by the Scottish Library Information Council and ran between October 2023 and March 2024. The project aimed to provide a platform for pupils in the Haven at the Academy to learn how to write their short stories for children on a theme of their choosing, and then read their stories to classes in Winston Primary (which is due to merge with the Academy in a new campus in 2026), and to also share their experiences with working with an author.

The project began as a series of six creative storytelling workshops, organised by Learning Community Librarian Linda Vaughan, which I ran with the pupils in Ardrossan Academy library. The activities were varied and supported the Curriculum for Excellence literacy curriculum in a fun and engaging way to help enhance pupils’ creative story telling skills. Sessions focussed on: story structure; characterisation; setting; using the five senses to create atmosphere; and how to edit stories.

Participation was the main aim of this project, but the stories which some of the participating pupils finished were also printed up into a booklet which was a great testament to the hard work of everyone involved in the project. The pupils were given a copy of the booklet to keep, and copies of the booklet will also be available in the school library and local library for the wider community to read!
