During the spring/summer 2024, I thoroughly enjoyed working as Author is Residence at three schools in Moray as part of the Scottish Book Trust’s Additional Support Needs Programme. It involved 15 author-contact sessions with small groups of S1/S2 pupils in three schools in Moray – Buckie High School, Keith Grammar School and Speyside High School and was designed to engage pupils with a wide range of creative storytelling techniques. The sessions took place over five visits to Moray in April – June 2024 during which we worked on getting ideas for stories from objects and pictures, oral storytelling with a twist, pictures and storyboards, and alternative ways to tell stories such as through puppetry.

The pupils and staff all worked very hard during and in between the workshops to produce a fabulous range of written stories, storyboards, pictures and a puppet show. The final session at the end of June was a celebration event held at Buckie High School library at which the pupils got to showcase their storyboards, slideshows and puppet shows which they created during the course of the project. Librarian Mr Leitch did a fabulous job of putting the slideshow together and hosting the celebration event with popcorn, sweets and snacks!
